A brief history
Mari Vineyards is dedicated to making exquisite red and white wine from experimental Italian grapes alongside traditionally grown appellation varieties.
Over 25 years ago, Marty Lagina made the bold choice to produce world class 100% estate grown wines using an unprecedented selection of grapes never before grown on Old Mission Peninsula. In homage to his Italian grandmother and namesake for his winery, Teresa Mari, Marty planted unorthodox varieties such as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese alongside classically grown appellation varieties like Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Riesling. Our first vineyard was planted within a mile of our winery over a hot and frantic weekend in 1999, resulting in our flagship wine, Row 7. This blend became our first official production in 2006, and has been our most popular wine ever since.
In 2009, local Winemaker Sean O'Keefe began consulting for the Lagina's while they utilized his family's winery. Born into the Chateau Grand Traverse family, Sean studied winemaking in Germany before returning home, quickly becoming known for his Rieslings. He officially joined the Mari Vineyards team when the winery opened in 2015.
In addition to fan favorite Italian red blends, our menu is continuously evolving to feature the best wines from the Northwest frontier of the Great Lakes region, all estate grown and hand harvested on Old Mission Peninsula. Our Tasting Room is open year-round to visit - cheers!
