The Winery at Black Star Farms invites you to embrace the enticing aromas and flavors of our hand-crafted wines and spirits, showcasing our region’s unique lake-effect climate and agricultural bounty.

Since 1998, we have been producing wines from local vineyards on the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas, providing you with a product we consciously craft from vine to bottle. Because of our commitment to preservation, many of our vineyards are protected from development and can only be used for agricultural purposes or green space. In addition, on our Suttons Bay farm, all cropping, livestock, and forestry standards meet or exceed the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) set forth by our agricultural governing bodies.

At Black Star Farms Suttons Bay on the Leelanau Peninsula, we invite you to explore our 160-acre winery estate, including our red wine processing facility, spacious tasting room, outdoor terrace, distinctive Inn, onsite bistro, equestrian facility, and recreational trails.

Just minutes from downtown Traverse City, you will find our second winery and tasting room located on the Old Mission Peninsula.  This "recycled" facility was once an apple cider mill but now focuses on our white wine production.

Lee was hired as a winemaker in 1998 and was an integral part of the development and construction of the Winery at Black Star Farms. Currently, he holds the position of head winemaker and managing member and oversees the winemaking operations for our two processing facilities on the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas. These facilities were developed separately and, in 2007, expanded to specialize in separate red and white wine production. He is also the director of our distillation program, which produces European-style fruit brandies and dessert wines. Lee is a proud self-taught winemaker, which he came to following a business degree at Michigan State University, years of experience in the restaurant industry, and extensive international travel. He was an assistant winemaker at a small winery in Italy’s Piedmont region before moving back to Michigan, where he was born and raised. He returned home at a time fortuitous with the growth and expansion of the local wine industry. He avidly supports all things Michigan and proudly pursues the best in Pinot Noir and Riesling.

This unique wine was made from fruit harvested during the holiday season. Crafted in the style and spirit of ice wine, it is rich and dense with a decadent lingering finish.

This unique wine was made from grapes left on the vine to freeze. The grapes were then harvested and pressed while frozen, resulting in a rich and decadent dessert wine.

This Riesling is vibrantly alive, lush, and highlighted with a balanced sweetness.

This Riesling's medium-dry style lends a touch of residual sugar and balanced natural acidity, making it versatile and enjoyable to many different wine drinkers.

This wine is balanced with sweetness and acidity, allowing for a rich mouthfeel without being too heavy - sweet yet refreshing!

Fortified

This wine is wonderfully sweet and fragrant. It is made in a ruby port style and aged in oak barrels for up to one year.

Teroldego Blend

A bold, dry red wine featuring Teroldego, a native grape to Northern Italy.

This variety shines best with an extended growing season and in a cooler climate, which is what Michigan is all about!

Although Merlot has lately taken a back seat to Pinot Noir, it has not lost its pedigree when planted on an appropriate site and allowed to blossom in the cellar.

Red Blend

This vineyard continues to astound everyone who works in it or with the fruit it provides. Year after year, it produces some of the best grapes grown in the state.

This red table wine is an interesting blend of vinifera and hybrid varieties, including Pinot Noir, Petite Pearl, Marquette, and Cabernet Franc. It results from the thoughtful art of blending by our winemaking team.

This approachable red table wine blends vinifera and hybrid varieties, including Dornfelder, Regent, Pinot Noir, and Marquette. It is fun and fruity, one of those no-hassle wines that can be served at room temperature or slightly chilled.

This may be the perfect expression of Michigan Chardonnay. No oak is used in fermentation or aging, so what you have is the pure expression of fruit and soil in one of the world's great grapes. 

This full-bodied white wine is a result of a great vintage. It is full of flavors based on the season's pome fruits, such as apples and pears. 

This dry white rewards its drinkers with layered complexity in both aroma and flavor.

Marquette Blend

The lively and youthful fruit character comes from a thoughtful blend of vinifera and hybrid grapes, including Marquette, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc.

As the name implies, this wine was harvested during the winter solstice of 2020. While still sweet, it displays an intensity reminiscent of ice wine.

This Riesling is an excellent example of how one of the world's greatest wine grapes thrives in Michigan.
